When I first started writing, I imagined the rewards of this work this way . . . Publication of my book! People I don’t personally know reading my book! Pay checks!
But time has proven that one of the greatest rewards of this work is this . . . friends. And it makes perfect sense, doesn’t it? God isn’t about worldly success. He’s all about PEOPLE.
Back in 2018, I felt led to start a local writer’s group here in Dallas with Lynne Gentry and I serving as mentors. We planned time to socialize, followed by Lynne or I presenting a “mini-lesson”, then those who wanted feedback on their work would share pages with the rest of us. Deborah Clack volunteered to host our meetings in her home, which was pivotal back then. In 2018, I still had three kids living under my roof and didn’t feel able to host. That’s how we began!

Since this original group, members have come and gone. Meeting locations have changed. But it’s still going as strong as ever. Numerous years now of friendship and support.
I’m sharing this in order to celebrate the fact that Deborah just had her first trade-length Christian fiction novel published! It’s called Even After This. I’ve had a front row seat to her work and dedication, so it’s a joy to celebrate this milestone.

I’ll soon have an opportunity to gather with additional bookish friends in April! Karen Witemeyer and D’Ann Mateer (both Inspired by Life authors) will be joining me at an event in Dallas at my church on April 18th. You’re invited!

This event was a hit last year and so the church librarian is bringing it back. We’ll enjoy a delicious potluck brunch and the authors will take part in a panel conversation. There will be a game or two, a giveaway or two, and a bookseller on site with books and bookish merch. Best of all, expect plenty of time to meet and chat with other people who love books–readers and authors alike.
There’s no cost to attend, but the church is asking everyone to register HERE in order to reserve your seat.
I’m so thankful for the friendships that writing has brought into my life! How has being part of the bookish community done the same for you?

What fun, Becky, and I agree. The relationships with writers and readers were such unexpected blessings in this writing journey! Great post, my friend, and blessings at your upcoming event.
“The relationships with writers and readers were such unexpected blessings” Exactly!!
I love meet the author events. I was able to meet and talk to several authors I read at a few Virginia Festival of the Book events. It certainly creates a close connection. Wish I lived near enough to attend your event since I read both your and Karen’s books. Have a great event!
I also wish you lived near enough to attend, Betty! I’d love to meet you.
Reader Rendezvous was the first book event I attended and I was hooked. I’ve been collecting friends and bursting authors eardrums when I meet them with my high pitch squealing ever since. You remember me, right? 😉
I absolutely do remember you, Amy! “bursting author eardrums” Ha ha ha! Authors LOVE it when readers show enthusiasm. We’re usually working at home alone, so when we have a chance to see/chat/interract with readers who enjoy our books, we’re thrilled.
Relationships are the best! I love my writer writers and the bonds we share. But after attending Reader Rendezvous a couple of years ago as a reader, not an author, I came away with new reader friends, too. Which has been awesome! It’s always nice to find your people in this world.
“It’s always nice to find your people in this world.” Amen! Especially in a world that can be as solitary as reading or writing.
I can’t count the number of wonderful people I’ve met in the writing and publishing world since starting my journey toward publication in 2019. I have some lifelong friends, and I’m so grateful.
Yes! The people in this community are such a generous group.
