Spring: Sometimes We All Need a New Start
In Indiana, spring has been late in arriving. Finally, in the last week, it has exploded on the scene. I’m still waiting for my irises to bloom, but the trees are fully decked out…vivid colors…delicate blooms, green leaves stretching out to touch the sky…
It’s a time of fresh beginnings. That may be why spring is one of my favorite seasons.
The winter was a really cold one, so the tease of the sunshine and a 
few jacket free days has been glorious. After the cold and snow, the beauty has been a treat that delights the senses. I so wish I could let you know just how delicious these flowers smell.
Still it’s spring, glorious spring!
After the cold, gloomy days, now we get the change.
Isn’t life like that sometimes?
Sometimes it’s only after some dark night of the soul weeks. Some frigid days where we were certain we would never again experience the warmth of the sun, that little shoots of life begin to erupt. 
The two are tied together. We can’t experience the beauty of spring without the dormancy of winter. We can’t rejoice in the softest of petals and scents if we are surrounded by them all the time.
Sometimes life is the work of preparing the soil. Weeding the flower beds. Wondering if green shoots will reappear. And at those moments we need to remember, the sun will return. The Son will return. And with it will come the most incredible new growth.
So here’s to new seasons and new growth. May we stop to enjoy the flowers along the way.

It’s been snowing off and on all week here, so no flowers yet except for a couple freezing crocuses. But I love early spring wildflowers: bloodroot, hepaticas, and especially spring beauty, which forms a thick carpet of pale, candy-striped pink in the woods. Soon soon soon!

Spring comes early here on the west coast (late Jan.), the hills green up and then poppies and lupines pop out but it isn’t fully developed until the wonderful winding arms of the live oaks leave out.
There are way too many flowers to love here. Huge hydrangeas, Purple cone flowers, statis,…
I am so jealous that spring arrived in January. JANUARY? Wow, we were still having below freezing, below zero temperatures. Hydrangeas are awesome. I love the balls of color.
I almost hate to mention this, but we’ve been having Spring since sometime in January here in Kansas. A few days of spring. A few days of winter. A few days of spring; a few days of winter.
A few days of summer; a few days of bitter cold winter.
Personally, I’d rather have winter until it’s over and then have spring and then have summer, but I’m from Michigan originally. Sigh.
Life is very definitely a series of good times and bad. Ups and downs, mountains and valleys.
But stop to think about it. If there was only good, how long would it be before life became dull? Good would be “just the way things are”. There truly is no way to fully appreciate the warmth and color of spring without the cold and grayness of winter, in whatever forms they take.

daffodils and lilacs
Ah, lilacs! I saw some starting to open yesterday. I wish I had a lilac bush because I ADORE their scent.
This is my first spring in our new home and there are wild crocuses blooming on my front lawn. So pretty!
Crocuses are such a delicate flower, yet the first to bloom in most places. I can remember seeing them poke through snow more times than not. Love them!
Here in north Mississippi the forsythia and daffodils have faded. The azaleas, wisteria, dogwood, iris, delphinium and geraniums are in full bloom. Unfortunately it is so wet we can’t even get into our garden to plant our veggies. So much for English peas and new potatoes here this year.
Oh, I miss azaleas from when we lived in the south!
Cara my favorite spring flower is the Lilac blossom. So fragrant and beautiful to the eye of the beholder. Last year I was very disappointed when a late frost killed off my lilacs before they even got to bloom. I’m hoping my lilacs will bloom this year. We have 3 bushes and love them all. They make me think of my mother , who also loved Lilacs.
